McDonald’s announced that it has joined with Apple in order to allow McDonald’s customers to use Apple’s newly released iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, or the Apply Watch to purchase a meal. Customers will be able to use McDonald’s new “mobile payments service” in October.

McDonald’s stated that a customer must have an “iTunes store account” in order to pay for their meals by credit or debit card.

Atif Rafiq, who is McDonald’s senior vice president and global chief digital officer, stated in the press release that the “mobile payments service” will enable McDonald’s to expand its business by providing its customers with different payment options.

Prior to the announcement about the “mobile payments service,” McDonald’s released a quarterly report that showed its sales had decreased internationally and within the U.S. during the month of August.

Based on the report, McDonald’s international sales decreased 3.7% and its sales in the U.S. decreased 2.7%.

McDonald’s attributes its drop in sales to the “tough” market in the food service industry. The company said that it’s implementing new ways, like the “mobile payments service” and new menu ideas like the Jalapeno Burger, in order to boost sales.

Barbara Thau, who is a contributor for Forbes, wrote in her article that a report by Brand Keys shows that more customers are going to Panera Bread and Chipotle because the customers’ believe these restaurants’ food is of a better quality than the food served at fast food restaurants like McDonalds, Burger King, and Taco Bell.

Robert Passikof, who is the founder and president of Brand Keys, told Thau that fast food restaurants like McDonald’s need to move away from focusing on the “Dollar Menu” and focus on the quality of the food the restaurant serves.

Thau quoted Passikof as saying, “You don’t build brands, or loyalty on the basis of price, that only works for commodity.”
